Considered as one of the core skills for 21st century learning, collaborative learning CL has in recent years gained renewed and increasing attention among educational researchers.

Many technologies and applications have been developed to support CL.  The topic of assessment has remained implicit in wide areas of research on computer-supported collaborative learning CSCL. The roles of assessment in scaffolding learning are well known. Assessment is broadly construed as the process of defining, selecting, analyzing, interpreting, and using information to increase students’ learning and development.  While traditional means of assessment are concerned with individualized assessment, examination and evaluation, the issue as to how we can support teachers and students in both monitoring and assessment of collaborative learning processes and products has not been addressed systematically. This special issue calls for papers discussing and exploring how CSCL can be assessed to better understand and improve teaching and learning.  Different types of assessment can be done in CSCL including 1 process and products assessment, 2  group and individual student assessment, 3 summative and formative assessment, 4 cognitive, social and motivational assessment, 5 self and peer assessment etc. The possible topics included in this special issue focuses on but not limited to:-        Assessment of collaboration or collaborative problem solving competencies-        Assessment approaches and methods e.g. social network analysis, content analysis, conversation analysis, interviews, questionnaires, rating scales, log-files, scripts, roles-        Assessment instruments and indicators performance and product rubrics for collaborative learning-        Assessment tools and applications e.g., data mining, automated analysis, data analytics, visualization in CSCL All submissions have to follow RPTEL journal manuscript guidelines and should be submitted to guest editors via emails wenli.chen@nie.edu.sg by 15 Dec 2013.
